一、Canadian standards of safety shoes
This standard is based on Z195-02: "Protective footwear" and Z195.1-02: "selection,care,use of protective footwear guide" by CSA (Canadian standards Association).
Workers may suffer foot injuries during the surgical procedure,or while working in the University of Toronto.
Note:"worker"in the standard,includes medical officers, staff,overseas students and visitors.
Principal investigators/supervisors and all other authority should:
1. Specify protection condition of feet.
2. Choose shoes(by this standard or others related to environmental health and safe work) for a particular danger.
3. To provide staff with appropriate protective footwear.
4. To ensure that the informed workers use, maintain and care protective shoes.
5. To ensure that workers wear suitable protective shoes at any time in dangerous areas.

2. Maintain protective shoes and make sure they are in good conditions.
Personal protective footwear:
Using the appropriate protective footwear can prevent injuries of feet.Appropriate protective footwear must be able to prevent the damage by specific risk,providing comfort and security,and comply with CSA Standard Z195-02 and Z195.1-02.
The protection of safety footwear:
1) Safety anti-smashing degree of steel toe cap
The people whose toe may be injured must be worn protective footwear,which provide adequate protection for the toe.All safety footwear must comply with CSA Standard Z195-02.Safety shoes approved by CSA must have a license-chip attached to the boots or comply with the standard of protective footwear by University of Toronto (page1-6):The book (1-6)selected by University of Toronto in December ,2004 quotes the protective standard of footwear.There are two levels about the anti-smashing degree of steel toe cap,depending on the extent of protection:
First Grade - -to withstand the impact of 125 joules (equivalent to 50 pounds of objects thrown at an altitude of 22 inches)
Second Grade- -to withstand the impact of 90 joules (equivalent to 50 pounds of objects thrown at an altitude of 16-inchs)
Steel toe shoes must be worn in case of falling objects,rolling objects,taper objects,the high-temperature articles,and danger of cutting.This may be used in the workplace, where there is a heavy material handling, heavy machinery or equipment,builder or machine shop.
2) Degree of anti-puncture
Workers must wear safety protective footwear when a sharp object pierce the bottom of the shoe.Safety footwear must comply with CSA Standard Z195-02.Safety shoes approved by CSA must have a license-chip attached to boots or shoes.
Wearer may be in danger of being injured by sharp objects (such as nails, wire, tack, metal scrap or glass),high temperature goods and cutting injury cases,they must wear anti-puncture shoes.
3) Degree of metatarsal protection
The people whose metatarsal may be injured must wear the right metatarsal protective footwear.All safety footwear must comply with CSA Standard Z195-02.Safety shoes approved by CSA must have a license-chip attached to boots or shoes,at the same time,provide metatarsal protection against the impact.
4) Insulation shoes' soles
People who may be injured due to electric shock are required to wear the insulation footwear which can supply adequate protection.
All safety footwear must comply with CSA Standard Z195-02.Safety shoes approved by CSA must have soles of insulation material in order to provide protection against electric shock (at least 18 kV).This kind of foot protection provide in dry environment.And protective properties of insulating materials may degenerate due to moisture and abrasion.The protective footwear against electric shock must be used in a danger of electric shock,but not used in danger of electrostatic discharge or micro-circuit.
5) Decentralized static footwear
In some workplaces,such as the existence of explosive,flammable materials,or the factory which minimize the static electricity equipment,the workers must wear scattered static shoes.Shoes'soles are embedded a small electrical device to disperse static electricity from walking on the ground,in order to reduce the accumulation of static electricity.
Static footwear should not used in a danger of electric shock (for example,surrounded by power switch lines or high power switching equipment),because the decentralized static electricity shoes in thiscircumstances could not provide protection.
The book (3-6)selected by University of Toronto in December,2004 quotes the protective standard of footwear.
6) Conductive soles
In the workplace of static ignition hazards,people must wear conductive protective shoes.Conductive protective shoes are embedded with a conductive material that can be put electric on the ground at the foot of the scope.When wearing conductive protective shoes,all containers and equipment should be connected to ground.Conductive protective shoes shouldn't be worn in the risk of electric shock,because they do not provide any protection.Conductive shoes must meet CSA Z195-02.
7) Protection of workers using chain saws
People whose skin,ankle, foot and toe may be injured while using chain saws are required to wear protective shoes and boots.
Note:CSA Standard Z195-02 safety points out that workers must choose the protection shoes they need, It shouldn't be assumed that a certain circumstances would use the same kind of footwear.Different working environments may have different risks.In addition,different workplaces may have different risks.In this case,we should choose more than one type of footwear for protection (more performances).
The protective shoes in the chemical laboratory
In laboratories of using and storing of chemicals must wear suitable protective shoes.Perforated shoes,sandals and similar footwear shouldn't wear in the laboratories.The appropriate footwear can be overshadowed and protect the entire foot.Materials of shoe-making ,including soles, uppers, must meet the laboratory environment, materials of handing and the task.
Because of potential danger of laboratory,footwear of providing additional protection may be necessary.Shoes with performances of slip-resistant, wear-resistant, anti-oil or anti-heat may need to be considered.Where the potential dangers of puncture,electric shock or static electricity exist,we must wear safety shoes approved by CSA.
二、European CE standards for safety shoes
EN344-1/EN ISO 20344
The standard defines the work requirements and test methods of safety shoes,protective shoes and boots.The standards should be used associating with the EN345-1/EN ISO 20345,EN346-1/EN ISO 20346 and EN347-1/EN ISO 20347.These three standards defines the related requirements of protective registration and function for several safety shoes.
EN345-1/EN ISO 20345
References of EN344-1/EN ISO 20344 standards,the European standard specifies the basic and additional requirements for safety shoes which marked with"S".These safety shoes equipped with anti-smashing steel toe can withstand impact of maximum 200 joules and presure of 15 kN.
EN345-1 is Europe's main criterion for CE safety shoes.The current European safety shoes are generally in accordance with EN345-.EN345-1 safety footwear standards are divided into SB,SBP,S1,S1P,S2,S3 six categories.Eastsafe safety shoes all comply with European CE EN345-1.

SB is the basic category of safety shoes
SB type safety specifies the shoes with wear-resistant and sweat-absorbent lining,anti-smashing toe,anti-shock and sweat-absorbent insoles,at the same time, outsole with the advantage of the wear-resistant,anti-shock,anti-slip.
SBP compared to SB safety shoes, adding anti-puncture midsole.
S1 safety shoes compared to SBP,adding the oil proof and anti-static out sole.
S1P safety shoes compared to S1,adding anti-puncture steel midsole.
S2 compared to S1 , adding the feature of water- proof.
S3 safety shoes is the highest category of Europe's CE EN345-1/EN ISO 20345.S3 class.Compared to S2, adding the water-proof function.
P-type safety shoes specifications:EN346-1/EN ISO 20346

O-type safety shoes specifications:EN347-1/EN ISO 20347
This kind of work shoes is different from the above kind of safety and protection shoes,because there is no steel toe cap,so they are not against shock and squeeze.
